rinspeed’s homage to james bond…

Published on July 28th, 2011

Since I’m on a diving binge lately, just had to share this collaboration with you. You may have heard about the collabo between Rinspeed and Carl F. Bucherer, but if not, take this on in.

This collabo is with CFB and the avant-garde automaker Rinspeed. Surely you remember the submersible vehicle in the classic Bond film, “The Spy Who Loved Me”, true??? Well if not, see the reference and appreciate the marketing images of Rinspeed’s Squba vehicle. If this isn’t life imitating art, then I don’t know what is.

about Rinspeed’s sQuba…

The “sQuba,” the world’s first real submersible car, became reality at the Geneva Motor Show back in 2008. Rinspeed boss Frank M. Rinderknecht (52) is known for his extraordinary automotive creations. The acknowledged James Bond enthusiast and Swiss automobile visionary kept imagining how it might be possible to build a car that can fly under water. In comes the sQuba.

The “sQuba” is watertight and pressure resistant enough to be maneuverable under water. The real challenge was to create a submersible car that moves like a fish in water.” It also had to be a sports car that was converted into a diving dream in the facilities of Swiss engineering specialist Esoro. In a first step the combustion engine was removed and replaced by several electric motors. Three motors are located in the rear. One provides propulsion on land, the other two drive the screws for underwater motoring. They are supported by two powerful Seabob jet drives in the front, which ‘breathe’ through special rotating louvers from HS Genion (for opening and closing the water intake). The rotating outlet jets were designed to be extremely light yet twist resistant by using high-tech nano materials, so-called Carbon Nano Tubes.

As sQuba launched, the automaker also announced a partnership with Carl F. Bucherer, one that will certainly lend to creativity without limits…

Dig it!!! If seeing is believing, check the video below…
