IWC’s galapagos diver, continued…

Published on July 2nd, 2010

I’m slightly bummed about Brasil’s loss in the World Cup, so my only consolation is to finish up my post on IWC’s Galapagos Diver. I guess???

No surprise, but this piece will definitely be on my all-time favorite dive watch post, when I stop finding pieces that I like. This Aquatimer, from the maestros at IWC, represents a a new partnership by IWC in aid of the environment, with the Charles Darwin Foundation. This non-profit organization was established fifty years ago and has set itself the objective of conserving the island group, situated west of Ecuador, as a world heritage site. IWC has committed to make a significant contribution in support of the Foundation generated by the proceeds from the sale of the Aquatimer Chronograph Edition Galapagos Islands.

Visually, the “Galapagos” has a simple, stealth aesthetic that always appeals to me. I’m diggin’ the black-on-black palette, complemented by white fonts and markers. Only the small seconds hand features
yellow as an indicator used for checking the function.

The strap is also fresh, with a waffle pattern, skin-facing. The watch is fabricated in a stainless steel case with a special coating of vulcanized rubber. It features an external, rotating bezel, mechanical chronograph movement, day and date display, small seconds hand with stop function and a commemorative relief engraving of a giant tortoise on the case back. This relief engraving is surrounded by the inscription “Tribute to the Charles Darwin Foundation – Galapagos Islands”, representing the Charles Darwin Foundation and the Galapagos Islands.

The Aquatimer Chronograph Edition Galapagos Islands is also fitted with a power reserve of 44 hours when fully wound and aggregate time recording up to 12 hours.

Again, no surprise coming from a maker like IWC, but very brilliant in my estimation!
